The Faculty of Social and Management Sciences Students Association is the executive governing body of the entire faculty departmental students’ association. It is responsible for the effective integration and assimilation of students into the faculty and university life. The body (FSMSSA) is responsible for ensuring students welfare and well-being while at school is promoted, respected, enjoyed, and thus, guaranteed. The organ is governed by an institution comprising fourteen (14) elected executives, led by the President and Vice President. It is one of the most prestigious and demanding, and respected statuses in the faculty, held in high regard, and attached with great responsibilities, that reflect an exemplary student of the faculty and the University of Buea as a whole. 

The faculty is made up of eight (8) unique and interdependent departments that collaborate and make up the structure. These departments are: Accounting, Banking and Finance, Economics, Geography,  Journalism and Mass Communication, Management, Sociology and Anthropology,  and Women and Gender.

History of the Faculty

Established in 1993, at the university's inception, it was one of the three initial faculties that the university boldly launched, despite the economic challenges of that time.
Ever since then, it has been central to the university's mission, offering interdisciplinary programs and expanding its academic departments over the years since its creation.

Mission of the FSMSSA

Three core areas: Representation, Academic and Professional development, and Community Building.
Our mission is to serve as the official link between the students and the Faculty and University administration, foster a culture of academic excellence and professional preparedness, and enhance the overall social welfare and cohesion among its members.

Leadership of FSMSSA

The leadership of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences Students Association is comprised of an Executive body, made up of 14 elected students from the eight interdependent departments. Led by the President and the Vice President to the Secretary General, Finance Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, Auditors, Academic Officer, Welfare Officer, Sports Coordinators, and General Organizer.

OUR PROGRAMS

At the Faculty Students Association, our programs are designed to represent and connect the needs of all the students within the faculty, from the eight different departments. Our programs targets:

1. Student Representation and Advocacy, Academic through Liaison, Welfare, and Policy Input; connecting the students with the faculty, and advocating for improved learning conditions, fair treatment, and better welfare of all students.

2. Academic and Professional Development through skills enhancement, career guidance, research, and innovation, that bridges the gap between academia and the professional world.

3. Social Cohesion and Community Service  by fostering unity, organizing social events, and taking social responsibility by participating in community service projects.

Get ready

Once your application is approved and your admission letter is sent, please do well to get ready and prepare all the necessary documents you need to complete your admission process. It is important to note that this is only a provisional admission; therefore, you must complete the payment of your registration fee, medical fee, sign an undertaking, and fulfill all other student requirements.

Admission & Aid

The Faculty Association and the Departments are readily available at the Faculty Building in stands, to provide every student (new or returning) with the much-needed assistance regarding admissions and aid. You can get close to any departmental infodesk to inquire more about their department and faculty, or for directions to the department and faculty of interest. Please feel free to use these services as they are there for you and all those who need more information on/about the faculty and departments.

Tuition & Fees

The registration and fees are mandatory for all students as part of the university requirements. It is also advised for students to pay their departmental dues and buy their departmental t-shirts to belong to the students’ association of their departments.

Scholarship Programs

The Faculty Student Association, in collaboration with CIBEC GROUP LTD, has established an SMS Welfare Fund, which is an independent organ, to identify students in critical need and support them in their pursuit while at the University of Buea. If you think you qualify for this, kindly follow the steps and check out the eligibility criteria before applying.
